Install and License MAXQDA

This tutorial is for installing and licensing MAXQDA on Windows and MacOS computers.

Find information on how to request a license, download and install the software, as well as how to activate the license.

Request a License

  1. Check MAXQDA’s system requirements here before requesting the software
  2. If you are currently faculty, staff, or a student at the University of Toronto, fill out the license request form. You will receive an email with information that will be needed in step 9 of the setup

Download and Install MAXQDA

  1. Follow the instructions to download and install MAXQDA on your computer

Activate the License

  1. If you are off campus, you will need to install U of T’s VPN software (if you haven’t already - scroll down on the page for detailed instructions for both Windows and MacOS users) and then connect to UTORvpn first in order to activate your license (and you will need to connect to UTORvpn every time you want to use MAXQDA when off campus). During this process, you may be prompted to login with your UTORID credentials

  2. Launch MAXQDA on your computer

  3. Accept the terms for the End-User License Agreement and click on Continue

  4. Agree to the Privacy Policy by clicking on Continue

  5. From the Welcome to MAXQDA pop-up window, select Connect to your institution’s network license

  6. Enter in the server address and the port number from the license request email

  7. Select Search for licenses automatically and click on the circular arrow

  8. An annual subscription entry “MAXQDA-Academia” should appear in the box below. Select it and click on Connect

You have now successfully connected to UofT’s site license for MAXQDA. MAXQDA will remember your license details, so you do not need to do this the next time you launch MAXQDA.

NOTE: If you are off campus, you will need to continue to connect to UTORvpn each time before you launch MAXQDA, otherwise you will get an error saying that it cannot connect to the network license server.

Sign up for a MAXQDA account (if you want to use the AI-Assist features)

If you want to use the AI-Assist features, you will need a free MAXQDA Account. Consult MAXQDA’s Account page for more details on how to sign-up and log in to your MAXQDA Account through MAXQDA.

Keep in mind, U of T’s general guidelines and information on AI, especially guidance on its appropriate use, if you are a student.
