Getting Started with Tableau Desktop (Beginner to Intermediate)
This is a beginner-to-intermediate level tutorial for Tableau Desktop version 2020.2. To acquire a free student, researcher, or instructor license for Tableau Desktop, please follow these licensing and installation instructions. If you want to learn this material in an online, self-paced course, with video instructions, you can self-enroll in our Practice with Tableau course.
Note: this guide builds on, and goes further than, the existing Introductory Tableau Desktop demo. There are some graphs in the introductory tutorial that are not covered in this tutorial, so feel free to consult both.
Downloading the Required Datasets
You will need a few Excel files and a CSV file to follow along with this tutorial. In order to download and unzip the data required for this tutorial, please follow these instructions:
Right click on the desktop and select New and then Folder. Name this folder Workshop.
Download the dataset files and save them to your Workshop folder.
Go to the Workshop folder and extract the files. Different computers have different setups. On a Mac, just double-click on the file to extract it. On a PC, you might first want to install a program called 7-Zip. Then you should be able to right click on the zip file and select 7-Zip, then Extract Here to extract it.
Now you should have a folder within the Workshop folder, TableauDatasetFiles, containing the data files required for this tutorial.
